A typical flat roof is not actually completely flat. When one is engineered correctly, it will have a slight slope which allows for drainage. The slope is usually about a quarter inch for every 12 inches of the roof. This is called a ¼:12 pitch. If the roof has exposure to tremendous sunlight during the day, there are special materials that can be applied to help keep it cool inside the home or office that it is installed on. It can also reduce carbon emissions and reduce utility bills.
If someone is interested in installing solar panels on the roof, there are systems designed specifically for flat roofs. These specialized systems are low profile, and they can serve dual purposes. As well as performing as you would expect they can also work as scaffolding for other equipment that might be installed on the roof such as the air conditioning unit. Once a flat roof is installed properly and maintained as recommended, it can easily last over 20 years.
